CBS drama Blue Bloods will be coming to an end later this year after nearly a decade and a half on screens, and the stars are still struggling to come to terms with its cancellation.
Blue Bloods stars Donnie Wahlberg and Bridget Moynahan have opened up on their upcoming emotional goodbye to the hit CBS drama.
The series starring TV legend Tom Selleck will be coming to an end after 14 seasons later this year.
A date for the finale hasn’t been set just yet, but the back half of the final outing, consisting of 8 episodes, will air after the drama takes a break in May.
Donnie and Bridget have portrayed siblings Danny and Erin Reagan throughout the show’s entire tenure, and will clearly struggle to let it go.
They swung by The Drew Barrymore Show on Tuesday and teased another traditional Reagan Sunday dinner in the next episode.
“You cannot fake that chemistry. It feels like a family,” Drew said after the sneak peek.
“It’s been 14 seasons, this is the final one, there’s two parts to it…
“How are you guys feeling about it? Because I think everybody’s really upset and sad, but also happy and satiated?”
Donnie chimed in with a laugh: “More upset and sad.”
Drew’s co-host Ross Matthews wanted to know, “What does it feel like, after 14 years, saying goodbye to these characters?”
Bridget revealed it will be harder saying goodbye to the real cast and crew than the characters they’ve played for over a decade.
“I think it’s more saying goodbye to the people behind the characters,” she told the hosts, putting her hand on her co-star’s shoulder.
“We’ve created such a family on set with each other and the crew…
“Most of the crew’s been with us for 14 years, so we’ve been through a lot of weddings, births, deaths, and everything. We’ve been through it all with each other.”
Bridget labelled Donnie her “biggest supporter”, especially after she started directing episodes of Blue Bloods. Her third episode aired last month.
Donnie recalled: “I don’t remember who it was so I’m not throwing anyone under the bus, but somebody came to me early on, someone said, ‘Oh, Bridget wants to direct.’
“And I was like, ‘Yeah, and? She’s gonna do it, right?’
“It was like, do you think there’s anything that she can’t do? She’s been lights out, phenomenal, she’s so…
“When you do what we do, you just know, and she just stepped right in and is so good.”
Blue Bloods season 14 airs Fridays on CBS.
